The innovation in the stage design was the use of a revolving stage in the first act, which allowed the action to shift from the salon to Violetta’s bedroom.

The protagonist of the opera was the young , making her debut in the role, chosen by Zeffirelli and Kleiber for her outstanding talents both as a singer and as an actress.
