Franco Zeffirelli OPERA Production realized by Teatro Comunale together with Théatre National Opera de Paris and Metropolitan Opera House:
– Paris, Palais-Garnier, January 21st 1986, 18 performances, conductor Zubin Mehta, starring Cecilia Gasdia – New York, Metropolitan Opera House, October 16th 1989, conductor Carlos Kleiber, starring Editha Gruberova Fourth theatrical staging of the opera directed by Zeffirelli, two years after the film version.

Here too, Zeffirelli maintained the idea of narrating the story as a flashback.

The innovation in the stage design was the use of a revolving stage in the first act, which allowed the action to shift from the salon to Violetta’s bedroom.

The protagonist of the opera was the young Cecilia Gasdia, making her debut in the role, chosen by Zeffirelli and Kleiber for her outstanding talents both as a singer and as an actress.
