The protagonists of the French production of the play, which Zeffirelli had staged the previous year in Italy to great acclaim, were Raymond Gérome and Madeleine Robinson. This success was achieved despite—or perhaps because of—the growing competitive hostility between the two leads, which perfectly suited the roles they were playing.
