Between 1953 and 1955, while establishing himself as a theatre set and costume designer, Zeffirelli gained further experience in cinema by working as an assistant director. In this film, he collaborated with Antonio Pietrangeli, who was making his directorial debut and with whom Zeffirelli had previously worked on "La terra trema".
