Zeffirelli's first experience in cinema was as an actor. Still undecided about the career path to pursue, he accepted a small role in the film. He felt quite prepared, as he had already performed in numerous theatrical productions with amateur and university companies and had established himself as a lead actor in radio dramas. Despite his competent performance and the great success of the film, Zeffirelli later chose to move to the other side of the camera.
