Before the official opening in Genoa, the productione had previews in Ferrara, Modena, Padua.
During the theatrical season 1967-68 it was performed in Rome, Teatro Eliseo, October 14 1967; then in the following cities, where Diana Torrieri replaced Sarah Ferrati: Florence, Teatro della Pergola, January 12 1968; Milan, Teatro Nuovo, January 24 1968; Verona, Teatro Nuovo, March 14 1968; Naples, Politeama, March 26 1968; Pisa, Teatro Verdi; Bologna, Teatro Duse.
In 1967, Zeffirelli established his own theatre company, "Compagnia Italiana di Prosa". In addition to Anna Maria Guarnieri, Giancarlo Giannini, Sarah Ferrati and Umberto Orsini, the new company included Rina Morelli and Paolo Stoppa, who chose this new venture over the revival of Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard", that they had interpreted the previous season under the direction of Luchino Visconti.
The first play tackled by the company was "A Delicate Balance", Edward Albee's new drama, which had premiered in New York in September 1966. Zeffirelli had easily secured the rights for its Italian production, following the success of "Who'sAfraid of Virginia Woolf?"
This production was also met with resounding success. The extensive press coverage preserved in the Archive highlights the critical acclaim for the performance, with particular praise for the lead actors. Beginning in January 1968, however, Sarah Ferrati had to step down due to health reasons and was replaced by Diana Torrieri.
