Brother sun, sister moon - www.imdb.com
Zeffirelli's original project was to create a contemporary musical centered around a modern-day Francis, embodying some ideals of the flower children — early advocates for environmental awareness and a connection to nature, standing in opposition to the rise of the consumer society. However, the development of the project was interrupted by a serious car accident, which forced Zeffirelli into a long period of treatment and rest.
When he returned to the project a few years later, he decided to take a different approach, choosing to tell the historical story of Francis instead. The modern perspective is evident in the blending of visual elements: the settings are authentic historical locations, captured in the natural beauty of the changing seasons, while the characters wear stylized, sometimes exaggerated costumes.
The musical aspect remains prominent, serving as a reminder of the film's original conception as a musical. In the English version, the songs were composed and performed by Donovan, while in the Italian version, the music was arranged and orchestrated by Riz Ortolani, with the songs sung by a young Claudio Baglioni.
