In 1989, entrepreneur Raul Gardini, president of Montedison and a passionate sailor, commissioned the construction of a sailing yacht at Montedison’s expense with the goal of competing in the world’s premier sailing competition, the America’s Cup. The yacht, named "Il Moro di Venezia I", was launched in Venice on March 11, 1990. At Gardini’s request, Zeffirelli oversaw the launch ceremony and documented the event in a film.
The yacht was later refined with increasingly competitive hulls, leading to "Il Moro di Venezia V" winning the Louis Vuitton Cup in 1992, earning the right to challenge the American defending champion of the America’s Cup — though ultimately without victory.
The documentary is preserved in digital format in the Foundation’s Archive.
