As early as 1963, Zeffirelli had tried to convince Anna Magnani to return to the theatre after more than ten years of absence, but she declined the invitation to play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Two years later, Zeffirelli overcame her resistance by offering her La Lupa, building a production around her that achieved immense success, crowned by an extensive European tour.
