La bohème (1965) - www.imdb.com
In 1962, Herbert von Karajan invited Zeffirelli to stage Puccini's "La bohème", which he would conduct at Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The production premiered in January 1963 and achieved overwhelming success, leading to its revival the following season and a tour in Moscow and Munich, where a recording was made.
In May 1965, Zeffirelli's sets were reconstructed at a soundstage in Cologno Monzese, a more suitable location for adjusting lighting and executing the necessary camera movements for a film adaptation of the performance. The Technicolor film was subsequently distributed by Warner Bros. in 350 theaters across the United States, including 50 in New York City alone, marking the most extraordinary popular dissemination of opera of that time.
